Interiorismo Artesanal, una Tendencia en Aumento

Artisan Interior Design, a Growing Trend

Emerging trend: Artisan interior design as a sustainable style.

When we talk about interior design, we think of spaces with luxury finishes and pieces, therefore, luxury often translates into perfection and something unique that only few can access. The opposite happens with crafts regardless of the place and culture they come from; The global market is so exposed to advertising and marketing that it values a product more for the status, luxury and personality it provides, however, crafts often lack advertising techniques and strategies, which is why they tend to be undervalued and even not taken taken into account as elements of luxury and exclusivity, however, tradition and craftsmanship are two characteristics that distinguish them from the rest of the mass-produced products and that can be taken as a competitive advantage to enter more globalized markets.

In the world of Interior Design, in recent years a decoration trend has emerged that has artisanal products as its central element. It is a trend that has been strengthening thanks to a combination of two incredible talents: artisans and designers, this combination is a perfect alliance to create unique pieces, on the one hand, the talent and skill of the artisans acquired over the years and on the other, the global vision and innovation that the designers provide .

In Mexico there are countless crafts that are marketed (mostly) locally, being acquired by national and foreign tourism, generally at an affordable price, they are usually small crafts for decoration and/or utilitarian purposes. These pieces, although very beautiful and with a lot of history behind each one. Different regions of each state have variations of artisan products in different materials, all of which makes them original products.

There are handmade pieces of larger size and price , as well as different materials, including wood, clay, textiles, ceramics and metals, to name a few. These types of crafts are positioned in international markets as they are unique and authentic pieces that reflect the traditions and culture of a region in their designs, shapes and colors.

Various examples of Mexican crafts have managed to conquer the international market and this has been achieved through the artisan-designer link; An example of this link is the “ Hilando México ” project, a collaboration of 7 designers and 32 embroiderers from the Yucatecan community of Ichmul and led by designer Sally Serur , achieving the creation of a collection of 90 pieces for interior decoration through redesign and improvement of traditional embroidery, as well as the use of high quality textiles and threads. These types of alliances pave the way for the incorporation of Mexican crafts into interior design in large global markets and represent a competitive advantage for Mexican artisans and designers who wish to expand the horizon of their businesses.

Although Mexican Artisanal Interior Design is a new trend, it is still extremely attractive mainly due to the economic potential it represents. According to estimates by Indrasen Vencatachellum, director of the Arts, Crafts and Design program at UNESCO, Mexico has 90 million potential consumers . However, estimating the market value is difficult because many products are not registered and there is no organization in charge of exporting all Mexican crafts. However, craft fairs such as Santa Fe can be taken as a reference. Faith in New Mexico, where, in two days the total sale was 2,000 million dollars and the average sale of the artisans was 15 to 20 million dollars.

With this data you can have a vision of what crafts represent both for the economy and for the development of new ideas and collaborations between disciplines such as design, marketing and communication with artisans and their communities.
